Introduction
In the realm of pig farming, the evolution of housing practices has led to significant shifts in operational strategies and animal welfare priorities. Contrary to the dated practices of outdoor pig rearing, which have largely faded since the 1960s, modern pig farming primarily unfolds within controlled environments. Today, ADA Enterprises is at the forefront of this evolution with its Dura Trac flooring—a cutting-edge solution meticulously designed to surmount the hurdles of traditional flooring systems. By spearheading advancements in flooring technology, ADA Enterprises aims to bolster both the welfare of pigs and the financial health of commercial pig farming operations. This breakthrough aims not only to enhance animal welfare and operational efficiency but to boost your bottom line significantly.
Part 1: The Costly Consequences of Traditional Hog Flooring
Navigating the pitfalls of traditional hog flooring can often feel like a muddy path fraught with unforeseen expenses and operational hurdles. The rugged terrains of mud and unstable surfaces not only compromise the hygiene and welfare of pigs but also lead to significant financial strain on farmers. Traditional flooring systems, lacking the durable, stable, and comfortable surface required for optimal pig health, inadvertently contribute to an array of costly consequences.
Veterinary bills can skyrocket due to infections stemming from poor flooring conditions. The absence of a stable surface leads to hoof problems, while the lack of a comfortable surface for pigs standing or resting increases the likelihood of injury and stress. These health issues not only demand immediate medical attention but also result in longer recovery times, further delaying pigs’ return to optimal health and productivity.
Moreover, traditional flooring often fails to provide good traction, essential for the safety and mobility of pigs. This oversight can result in slips and falls, leading to injuries that require veterinary intervention. The non-conductive nature of superior flooring materials like rugged plastisol is crucial for reducing chilling, a common issue in environments with poor flooring that directly impacts pigs’ growth rates and overall well-being.
The challenges extend beyond health concerns, impacting operational efficiencies as well. Cleaning and maintaining traditional flooring systems is often labor-intensive and time-consuming, diverting valuable resources away from more productive activities. Inefficient manure management on inadequate flooring further compounds the problem, leading to increased labor costs and environmental issues such as water pollution and elevated greenhouse gas emissions.
In light of these challenges, the shift towards innovative flooring solutions becomes not just a matter of improving animal welfare but a strategic financial decision. By addressing the core issues associated with traditional hog flooring—such as ensuring good traction, easy cleaning, and manure management, and providing a stable, durable, and comfortable surface—farmers can significantly mitigate the costly consequences that erode their bottom line.

I have been working with ADA Enterprises since the mid to late 80s. We use Dura Trac creep sides with cast iron centers for the sow and haven’t seen any wear on the flooring. We replaced solid rubber mats with the Dura Trac Solid Plate option in our creep areas. This works really well. No bacteria gets underneath and it lasts much longer than the rubber mats. There haven’t been any issues from a clean-up standpoint.
Galvanized triangular rod flooring may clean easier, however sows are injuring themselves and the baby pigs are cold. We have built a lot of farms and we keep putting in Dura Trac flooring. You don’t keep buying what you don’t like.

During the course of my career in the pork industry I have had experience with plastic coated steel flooring, triangular bar flooring, and interlocking hard plastic pig flooring while working in different facilities. I have over 30 years’ experience with Dura Trac plastic coated steel flooring manufactured by ADA Enterprises, Inc. We have stringent cleaning practices and use various chemicals to get our facilities as clean as possible and discuss our equipment almost daily. We test the thoroughness of our cleaning by swabbing test areas and counting bacteria. Many aspects are examined when we consider which farrow flooring would best fit out facilities. These include structural integrity, ease of cleaning, longevity, animal friendliness, and cost of ownership. If we were to remodel or build a new facility today, we would 100% choose the flooring from ADA Enterprises as it is preferred to all others.
